Defining Trauma

As I continue my discussion about trauma, I decided that we should start with defining what trauma is. Let's start with a couple of simple definitions:

First, did you know that the word trauma is a Greek word meaning "wound"? It is also defined as a deeply disturbing experience.

From a therapists point of view trauma is seen as a more serious & intense event that requires the threat or fear of violence or death.

So when we use the word trauma, it can have many different meanings. Additionally, traumatic events can happen to individuals, families, communities, countries & even globally. Trauma can be used in circumstances when someone feels threatened, is assaulted, sexually assaulted, neglected, verbally & emotionally abused, witnessed violence, experienced a natural disaster, terrorist threat & so on.

I have included some articles that define & discuss the various traumatic events. The last article specifically discusses Child Trauma.
